Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification: 25 years and beyond
Consultation on implementation of the landmark ecumenical document on the 25th anniversary of its signing
This Consultation will explore the achievements and potential of the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification (JDDJ).
Participants will analyze the history of the process leading to the historic signing, the methodology of the JDDJ, its implementation, the nature of association, and its future impact: what hopes are there that it can it continue to shape and inspire both theological dialogue and practical cooperation for the common good?
The JDDJ is the only ecumenical document in the western church that reached juridical status through its signing by leaders of the Roman Catholic Church and the LWF. Signed on 31 October 1999, the Declaration was hailed as a milestone document that resolved one of the most tragic divisions of the Reformation period.
Since 1999, it has become a unique multilateral platform for ecumenical engagement. The Anglican Communion, World Methodist Council and World Reformed Communion of Churches have all associated with the JDDJ through their own processes and statements.
