A Singing Communion: Pilgrimage – Freedom – Belonging

In 1524, the first Lutheran hymnal, the so-called “Achtliederbuch” was published. 500 years later, a new Global Songbook 2024 will be launched during a festive service at St. Mary’s Church in Wittenberg, Germany. The LWF Vice-President for Central Western Europe, Bishop Kristina Kühnbaum-Schmidt, will lead the service and Prof Dr. Dirk Lange, LWF Assistant General Secretary for Ecumenical Relations, will participate in the conference preceding the launch.

A picnic in Luthergarten where several of the music pieces will be performed and sung together follows the service.

The Global Songbook features 200 hymns from the seven LWF regions and adds a section representing the common Lutheran heritage.

The Global Songbook and more accompanying material for use in LWF member churches will be available online after the launch.
