01 Feb 2023

Lutheran World Federation Youth are conducting a survey to collect information about the communion’s commitment to youth leadership and are asking that member church leaders of all ages complete the survey. The results will be published before the Thirteenth LWF Assembly in Krakow held on 13-19 September.

Questionnaire aims to gauge commitment to youth leadership, identify future actions

(LWI) - In order to capture the current attitudes concerning youth in leadership, a survey released last week will be used to help shape the direction and priorities of global and regional Lutheran World Federation Youth (LWF) going forward.

The presence of existing commitment to youth leadership is not the only interest of the survey but also, “our hope is that these stories collected from the survey will help us cast a vision for the future,” said Ms. Savanna Sullivan, LWF Program Executive for Youth.

Stressing that the survey is not intended for youth participation only, Sullivan said the survey is to collect the responses about what youth leadership means to people of all ages and, overall, to share how impactful youth leadership is across the communion.

She adds that visioning on this scale depends on the commitment of the entire communion and their expectations for the future of youth leadership.

“This survey was implemented and spearheaded by youth, but we hope to hear from every generation. We want to hear from grassroots leaders about their perspectives on best practices to promote youth leadership.”

Results to be published

In 2014 a similar survey was conducted, and results published ahead of the Twelfth LWF Assembly in Windhoek held in 2017.

“We also want to identify the biggest challenges that either persist from the last survey or which have arisen since the 2013 publication,” Sullivan said.

The results of the survey will be released in a publication before the Thirteenth LWF Assembly in Krakow held on 13-19 September.

The survey will give “a clearer picture of each member church's official policy and the on-the-ground reality regarding young leadership.”

The survey is available in French, Spanish, German, and English.

Since 1984, the LWF has had a constitutional commitment to have 20% of every governing body made up of young leaders. Diverse leadership, including young leadership, across the communion is one of the core values of the LWF, deeply grounded in our theology.
