LWF leaders thank churches for powerful expression of communion relationships
(LWI) – As the Advent season and preparations for Christmas begin, The Lutheran World Federation (LWF) is encouraging its member churches to continue nurturing people and communities “with the gift of God’s word, a signpost that no pandemic can wash away.”
In a joint pastoral letter, LWF President Archbishop Dr Panti Filibus Musa and General Secretary Rev. Dr Martin Junge remind churches that their witness “gives orientation, confidence and hope to people seeking to remain strong as they live through these demanding times.”
The two LWF global leaders note that while this year’s liturgical time of “waiting with hope” will likely miss signposts such as regular worship or choir singing, and the signs of hope around the world may be obscured, “nothing will prevent God from transforming us for a life in abundance as a gift of Christ.”
Musa and Junge thank church leaders, who without “ready-made answers” or “toolboxes to rely on” have continued to proclaim the gospel, serve suffering neighbors, and advocate for peace with justice. “We thank each of you for steadfastness, creativity and hope during these times of pandemic.”
The president and general secretary also express gratitude for the churches’ “prophetic defiance” to stay connected and continually praying for each other across the regions and globally. “You have been a powerful expression of the vitality of our communion relationships.”
As Advent begins, “we shall be affirmed in our shared faith” and “anticipate in hope as we journey through this special time,” the LWF leaders conclude.
