Thirteenth Assembly adopts public statement on tax justice
(LWI) - Make global economic systems fairer and ensure that faith communities are included in the drawing up of a proposed legally binding United Nations Convention on Taxation. Those are the calls from the Lutheran World Federation (LWF) contained in a public statement on tax justice that was adopted on the final day of the Thirteenth Assembly in Kraków, Poland.

In the statement, the LWF notes that in a world struggling with multiple crises, the current international economic and tax system hampers “the ability of countries to address poverty and provide basic services for their citizens.” The Assembly calls on the LWF member churches “to embody hope in the public space, through calling for a new international financial and economic architecture through demanding an inclusive, democratic and legally binding global tax convention.” It also calls on the U.N. member states to “Expedite the process of developing the proposed legally binding UN Convention on Tax, ensuring that it is fair, just and equitable.”
The Thirteenth Assembly of The Lutheran World Federation took place from 13-19 September 2023 in Kraków, Poland. The Assembly was hosted by the Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession in Poland and its theme was “One Body, One Spirit, One Hope” (Ephesians 4:4-6).
